Dragons were formed at the Beginning; the Time of Creation and Chaos.

Dragons were born of the Elements; Creatures of Earth and Ocean; of Flight; of Fire and Thunder; of great Mysticism and Magic; ancient creatures, erudite, possessed of the Wisdom of the Ages.

Dragons became Protectors of the Skies, Seas and Earth, and of all the Precious Gems and Metals it contained: Hence the legends of dragons hoarding caves of gold and silver, and protecting chests of jewels.

Smaug was Massive and Powerful. He was able to fly thanks to his large wings, and had the ability to breathe Searing Hot Flame. His most distinguishing characteristic (aside from his greed), is his arrogance; loudly boasting his superiority. This is his downfall, as he was not able to recognize his only weakness.

Smaug, one of the last Great Dragon Hawks of Middle-earth is remembered for destroying the town of Dale and capturing The Lonely Mountain (Erebor) from the Dwarves with all of its treasure. Smaug lived there for many years, until he was slain by Bard the Bowman with Bilbo's help. Yet, Smaug is not pure evil; so much as just greedy.

While he does ruthlessly destroy, after claiming Erebor for himself, he was apparently content to allow the rest of Middle Earth to go about its business so long as he is not disturbed.
