Lakshmi is one of the most beloved Hindu Goddesses. Lakshmi represents the perfect state of refinement which transcends the material world. In Ancient Indian texts, she is the embodiment of the Auspicious Qualities of: food, royal power, universal sovereignty, noble rank, power, holy luster, kingdom, fortune, bounteousness, and beauty. She is worshipped in late autumn, at the festival of “Divali” where her followers ask for blessings of fertility, prosperity, abundant crops, and good fortune for the coming year.

In Indian mythology, the God Vishnu is said to have churned the milk ocean into chaos, in order to extract the essence of immortality. The milk ocean or “primordial waters” yielded this valuable essence, which is said to be the Goddess Lakshmi.

She is Creation; she is the transformation of formless waters into organic life

.

Lakshmi is usually depicted sitting atop a lotus blossom: the symbol of fertility, purity, and spiritual perfection. She is often surrounded by the blooms and buds of the lotus, signifying the various stages of creation. When depicted alone, without her consort Vishnu, she usually has four arms representing her nurturing and generous nature. Gold coins flow from her hand in prosperity. A pot of “Amrita” the bliss juice of Immortality is held in another hand. A Bilva fruit in another, representing the spiritual strife which occurs before one achieves moksa, or freedom from the bondage of karma.

The power and beauty of Lakshmi can be felt by meditating on the spiritual realm, which is the origin of our creation, and appreciating the blessings and bounty of nature which we are given every day.
